go to the gallery home pageComprehensive Unicode Test Page for the Inuktitut Syllabary

This page tests the Inuktitut Syllabary subset of the "Unified Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics" Unicode block.

It is part of the Gallery of Unicode Fonts and is based on the following sources:

The syllabary is used for Inuktitut languages/dialects:

pick the desired font name

from this list    - or -       by typing in the exact font name

The selected font must be installed on your system. This page might not display properly with older versions of Internet Explorer or Netscape. Additionally, Netscape & Firefox may show an unsupported character using a different font to the one selected. Internet Explorer seems to do this too, but to a much lesser extent.

Note that the letters used in column/row headings represent the Unicode designations, not necessarily how the letters would be transcribed using the Latin alphabet.

Notes:

  1. In the 1960s the AI series was dropped for typewriter hardware reasons. With that change AI (U+1401) was written as A + I (U+140A U+1403), PAI (U+142F) became PA + I (U+1438 U+1403), et cetera. The AI series has fairly recently been re-adopted by some, but not all, user communities.
  2. Some sources show RAI with the "handle" on the left, like R-CREE RE (U+1543).
  3. Some sources show the NG series with two small connected circles while others use one small circle and a small connected half-circle.
  4. I am unable to find NNGAI in Unicode. The character looks like NNG + GAI (U+1596 U+1489).
  5. I am unable to find LHAI in Unicode. The character looks like LHA (U+15A4) rotated 180 degrees.
  6. Non-Unicode sources on the Inuktitut syllabary show an isolated "h" as a raised, half-size Latin "H": H
I am unable to find this character in Unicode.
