WAZU JAPAN's Gallery of Unicode Fonts

This page tests the blocks for "Yi Syllables" (U+A000 - U+A48F) and "Yi Radicals" (U+A490 - U+A4CF).

It is part of the Gallery of Unicode Fonts and is based on the following sources:

The selected font must be installed on your system. This page might not display properly with older versions of Internet Explorer or Netscape. Additionally, Netscape & Firefox may show an unsupported character using a different font to the one selected. Internet Explorer seems to do this too, but to a much lesser extent.

Placing your cursor over any of the characters in the chart shows the codepoint and its name from the Unicode Character Database (Copyright © 1991-2006 Unicode, Inc). This may not work with some browsers.

There are two sections presented below to test characters in the Yi blocks for the modern (1970s) Yi Syllabary:

• The first section shows the Yi Syllabary as normally organized.
  • Non-existant syllables are shown as a grey rectangle.
  • The horizontal column headings indicate the inital consonant, if any.
  • The vertical row headings indicate the medial vowel and the final tone.
  • Together the initial consonant plus the medial vowel and final tone represent the Unicode character name.
  • Note that the letters used in column/row headings represent the Unicode designations, not the actual sounds of the syllables. That information can be found elsewhere, including on Andrew West's Yi Phonetic Alphabet page.
     
• The second section is just the list of Yi Syllable and Radical codepoints and is laid out in a grid format for easy comparison against the online Unicode charts. Reserved/unallocated codepoints are shown with a gray background.
